5 Do's & Don'ts for Selecting Programs

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW to find the right training program for you

All roads can totally lead to Rome. What do I mean by that? Well - there’s not just ONE WAY when it comes to choosing the type of training program you should be on. We all have different likes/dislikes, schedules, personality types, past injuries, genetic traits…you get the idea. We’re all unique. There’s a lot to consider when you’re trying to figure out the best approach to training so I created the below list. Hopefully this can relieve some stress about picking the right program for you. And besides, who doesn’t love a good list?!

✔️DO know what your needs are

  • What areas in your riding need the most improvement?

  • What do you need in the way of guidance and motivation? Can you workout on your own? Do you need an in-person strength coach? Is an online coach the best route for you?

✔️DO determine the purpose of your programming

  • Are you in-season? Starting your off-season?

  • Are you rehabbing from an injury?

✔️DO look at what equipment you have access to

  • Will you be at home?

  • Do you own resistance bands? Dumbbells?

  • What equipment is readily available at your gym?

✔️DO write down how much time you’re willing to commit to a training program

  • Two to three times a week? Five times a week? 30-minute sessions? Hour-long sessions?

✔️DO assess your level of experience with training/working out

  • What is your skill set in the gym? Are you a weight lifting pro? Have you had help learning correct form, but you’re a little rusty? Are you a beginner*? (*Note: there should be no shame in your “beginner status” game. Everyone needs to start somewhere!)

❌DON’T pick a program that’s not specific to the goals you wish to accomplish

  • This may seem redundant, but there is so much information out there about fitness. That can be overwhelming. Always remember to stop and ask yourself if you think the program will help you reach your goals.

❌DON’T just YouTube “workouts” and cross your fingers

  • There are a lot of videos on YouTube that are general in nature and have a “one-size fits all” theme (you’re unique, remember?). They’re not made to give you an exact plan you need to address your goals.

  • Also you (unfortunately) don’t need any proper credentials to post a workout video on YouTube. Beware of the fitness hopeful that doesn’t know what they’re doing.

❌DON’T choose a program that is too difficult for you but may be trendy (like boot camps or HIIT session)

  • This increases your risk of being injured.

  • It can also just be super discouraging. (Thumbs down)

❌DON’T let your program stay at one level

  • The program you pick should have progression and increase in difficulty.

  • Without progression you might see some initial results (if you haven’t been active in some time). The long-term effects, however, will be short.

❌DON’T let the wrong professional to help you

  • Make sure if you hire someone that they are qualified in the area that you need the help.

I know that’s a lot to consider. I’m here to help if you need it, so feel free to reach out by filling in the form below👇🏻
